The hiker said he thought the ground was solid before his leg sank into the muck, trapping him until a rescue team arrived

Austin Dirks was hiking in the upper reaches of Arches National Park in the US state of Utah when his left leg suddenly sank into the ground. According to the BBC’s partner CBS News, he used a GPS satellite messenger to alert rescuers to his exact location. Dirks said he spent two hours trapped in the quicksand in 20 degree temperatures (-7 Celsius) before a rescue drone finally buzzed overhead.
