PARIS (AP) — Princess Diana returned to Paris in wax Thursday as one of Europe’s oldest wax museums unveiled a new figure of the British royal in the so-called “revenge dress,” decades after her tragic death in the city.

The statue was ordered in Paris after the director of the Grevin Museum visited London and came away underwhelmed by the Diana likeness at Madame Tussauds, prompting him to commission his own version, museum officials said.

Grevin’s life-size — and very convincing — figure of the late Princess of Wales is dressed in a replica of the black, off-the-shoulder, figure-hugging cocktail dress Diana wore to a Serpentine Gallery event in London in 1994.

It was the same night that King Charles III — at the time Prince Charles — acknowledged on television that he had been unfaithful with Camilla Parker Bowles, now Queen Camilla.

For Paris, the tribute carried extra weight: Diana — “Lady Di” to the French, who still use the nickname affectionately even though she spent most of her public life as a princess — died after a car crash in a tunnel by the Seine in 1997, a death that helped immortalize her in the Parisian imagination, where she still remains present in the flowers and handwritten notes left at informal memorials.

Museum officials noted that the unveiling came on the 30th anniversary of an explosive interview that Diana gave to BBC “Panorama,” which observers say dented the standing of the monarchy and the Queen.

Some observers noted wryly how the museum’s newest royal guest was positioned far from wax likenesses of her famous ex-husband and mother-in-law.

High heels, a pearl choker at her neck and a small handbag clasped in both hands completed the sculpture. Tabloids later dubbed the outfit the “revenge dress,” and the museum leaned into that symbolism.

French novelist Christine Orban, who wrote “Mademoiselle Spencer,” a novel imagined from Diana’s point of view, said the figure was overdue.

She called the black dress a turning point in Diana’s story.

“The dress is very significant of her liberation because in the royal family, black is only worn for funerals, and then such a sexy dress for a Princess of Wales, well, that’s not common either,” she said. “So she decides to wear her high heels and Louboutins. And to go to the Serpentine Gallery to make an impression, to get photographed.”

Grevin, founded in the 19th century, has long packed its ornate halls with political leaders, artists, pop-culture figures — and, yes, British royals. Diana is the latest in a steady stream of star wattage additions the museum uses to refresh the collection and boost visitors at the site that has attracted some 700,000 annual visitors in recent years.

News of the unveiling filtered through Paris, even before most people had a chance to visit.

“It brought back that night in the tunnel, even though I was a kid then,” said Julien Martin, 38. “Paris never completely let go of Diana, so it made sense that a big wax museum finally did this.”

“I wasn’t even alive but for my generation, she seems like the first modern princess — glamorous, but also vulnerable,” said 24-year-old student Lina Ben Amar. “If tourists come to see celebrities in wax, she is one of the first they will look for.”

Diana will be in good company. Curators set her beside another prominent royal who died in Paris — albeit centuries earlier: Marie Antoinette.

Deep in the trove of 20,000 documents released by the House Oversight Committee last week is an email from Jeffrey Epstein to Jeffrey Epstein, dated Oct. 8, 2016.

The entire message consists of a lengthy rough draft of what appears to be a profile of the disgraced financier that was never published.

Tucked in the middle of it — between dinner party vignettes, musings on the billionaire class and quotes from Epstein himself — is a reverent anecdote that serves to illustrate the stratospheric level of access that a onetime high school math teacher was able to achieve in just a couple decades.

“In 1994, just at the moment when Prince Charles is on television acknowledging his love for Camilla Parker Bowles, Jeffrey Epstein is sitting with his arm around Princess Diana at a dinner at the Serpentine Gallery in London,” it reads, noting that Diana “is wearing her ‘revenge’ dress that evening.”

Another version of the draft included in the document dump is slightly less descriptive, saying Epstein was simply sitting “next to” Diana.

Regardless of his exact positioning, the presence of the world’s most notorious sex offender at what has become quite a famous moment in Diana lore is somewhat of a shock to read.

There are clues about the author’s identity in the draft. The writer obviously had close access to Epstein and some others in his orbit, and notes he was once part of an effort to purchase New York Magazine.

Over the weekend, Semafor’s Ben Smith made a phone call to confirm that the author was, indeed, the controversial journalist Michael Wolff.

Smith reported that Wolff drafted the piece in 2014 as a sort of teaser for Epstein, in an attempt to gain greater access to the most powerful and wealthy of Epstein’s friends, to flesh out the reporting.

Wolff recounted telling Epstein, “It could be like this — but I need to have access to everybody.”

“I’m trying to lead him along to give me something, and the something would be: Give me access to everybody,” Wolff said, per Smith. (Much of his conversation with Wolff centered on the ethics of his chummy relationship with Epstein.)

The 8,600-plus-word piece would have run in New York Magazine; a 2015 email to Epstein consisted of a long list of fact-checking questions, including one about mingling with Princess Diana at the Serpentine Gallery. Epstein does not appear to have replied, at least via email.

The London meeting, if it occurred, would have come more than a decade before Epstein was publicly accused of sexually abusing a 14-year-old girl at his Palm Beach mansion — among a number of other underage girls — and long before the Miami Herald’s Julie K. Brown unearthed explosive details about the “sweetheart” plea deal Epstein was able to reach with prosecutors even as he continued to find new girls to abuse.

As an anecdote in Wolff’s story, it succeeds in illustrating the reach Epstein had as far back as the 1990s, when he palled around with then-real estate baron Donald Trump.

The 1994 “revenge” dress marked a contentious period for Diana. She had gone to the gallery for a fundraising event hosted by Vanity Fair that was held, as Wolff noted, the same evening that ITV aired an interview with then-Prince Charles in which he admitted to being unfaithful in his marriage.

The late royal paired the shoulder-baring evening gown with a sapphire-and-pearl necklace. Hitting above the knee, the dress was widely interpreted to be a message to her estranged husband and the world that she refused to be ignored. She appears in photographs striding into the venue in a swirl of black silk, one arm outstretched to shake someone’s hand.

HuffPost reached out to Buckingham Palace for comment but did not receive an immediate reply.

Princess Diana is long gone, but not forgotten — nor was the time capsule she once buried.

The Great Ormond Street Hospital in London announced Wednesday that a wooden box of then-popular items had been securely retrieved from its walls, decades after Diana planted it there in 1991 to commemorate the start of construction on the renowned children’s clinic.

While the box was meant to be opened only centuries later, the hospital said development of a new cancer center first required “outdated facilities” to be demolished. Diana’s capsule was thus retrieved earlier this year, while its contents have only just now been revealed.

The previously mysterious assortment included a CD copy of Kylie Minogue’s 1990 album “Rhythm of Love,” a picture of Diana, British coins, a snowflake hologram, local tree seeds, a solar-powered calculator and the height of 1991 technology — a Casio pocket TV.

It also held a copy of The Times newspaper featuring headlines on the Gulf War.

While the famously charitable princess was president of the hospital at the time, the items were reportedly chosen as part of a competition on the U.K. children’s show “Blue Peter,” after its viewers were asked to select eight items that best represented life in the 1990s.

The hospital’s executive director, Jason Dawson, said unearthing the relics was “almost like connecting with memories of things that have been planted by a generation gone by.” Janet Holmes, a senior health play specialist on staff there in 1991, felt similarly transported.

“It brought back so many memories seeing the pocket TV in there — I had bought one for my husband back in the day, for when he had a break whilst driving his coach around the country,” she recalled. “They were very expensive then!”

Diana was beloved around the world for her kindness and dedicated humanitarian efforts.

She notably shook hands with HIV patients in 1991 to dispel the then-rampant stigma that HIV/AIDS could be passed on through touch, and later raised awareness about banning landmines by walking through an active minefield in Angola in 1997.

Diana became president of the Great Ormond Street Hospital in 1989 and frequently visited the children. She also raised a whopping £54 (or $72 million) to fund its Variety Club Building, reportedly considered the highest U.K. charity appeal in history at the time.

The late Princess of Wales died in 1997 in a high-speed car crash in Paris. She was 36.
