Trilla, Ill. — A single-engine plane crashed in a field in central Illinois on Saturday, killing all four people on board.

Coles County Coroner Ed Schniers said the victims were two women and two men, but he could not release more details pending notification of next of kin.

The Cessna C180G airplane went down shortly after 10 a.m. near the unincorporated community of Trilla, the National Transportation Safety Board said via email. Preliminary information indicated that it struck power lines, the NTSB said.

“Terrible news out of Coles County,” Gov. JB Pritzker said on social media, adding that his administration “is monitoring the situation as we keep those impacted by the plane crash in our thoughts today.”

The crash of a Delta Airlines plane in Toronto is the fourth major aviation disaster in North America in the last month.

Here’s a look at each of the crashes.

A Delta Airlines plane arriving Monday at Toronto’s Pearson Airport from Minneapolis flipped and landed on its roof, injuring at least 17 people.

The airport confirmed that an “incident” occurred Monday with the Delta flight and that all 80 passengers and crew are accounted for. Ornge air ambulance said it was transporting one child to Toronto’s SickKids hospital and two adults with critical injuries to other hospitals in the city.

Video from the scene showed the Mitsubishi CRJ-900LR upside down on the snowy tarmac as emergency workers hose it down.

According to the Meteorological Service of Canada, the airport was experiencing blowing snow and winds of 32 mph (51 kph) gusting to 40 mph (65 mph). The temperature was about 16.5 degrees (minus 8.6 Celsius).

Endeavor Air, based in Minneapolis, is a Delta subsidiary and the world’s largest operator of CRJ-900 aircraft, a popular regional jet developed by Canadian aerospace company Bombardier.

The Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement that the Transportation Safety Board of Canada will head up the investigation and provide any updates.

A small commuter plane on its way to Nome crashed on Feb. 6, killing the pilot and nine passengers.

The Bering Air single-engine turboprop Cessna Caravan was traveling from Unalakleet when it disappeared about an hour after taking off. The Coast Guard said the aircraft went missing about 30 miles (48 kilometers) southeast of Nome.

After a wide search, the plane’s splintered body and debris were found the next day on the sea ice.

The day of the crash there was light snow and fog, with a temperature of 17 degrees (minus 8.3 Celsius).

The commuter flight was part of a workhorse network of short-hop flights that people in the immense and rugged state rely on to get to medical appointments, attend work meetings, buy essential supplies or even travel to away sports games.

The victims included two men who were on a work trip to service a heat recovery system vital to a community’s water treatment plant, a retired teacher who was on a trip mentoring other teachers, and another person who was flying for a doctor’s appointment.

A medical transport jet with a child patient, her mother and four others aboard crashed into a Philadelphia neighborhood on Jan. 31, exploding in a fireball that engulfed several homes. The crash killed seven people, including all those aboard, and injured 19 others.

The Learjet 55 took off and then plummeted in a steep descent, crashing less than a minute after takeoff from the Northeast Philadelphia Airport. The plane hit the ground during a busy Friday evening less than 3 miles (5 kilometers) from the airport, leaving a crash scene of at least four blocks.

A father who was inside his car when the small plane crashed was among those killed.

The plane operated by Jet Rescue Air Ambulance was on its way to Mexico, returning the child, who had spent months in treatment at Shriners Children’s Philadelphia hospital.

Jet Rescue is based in Mexico and has operations both there and in the U.S.

A midair collision between an Army helicopter and an American Airlines flight about to land at Washington’s Ronald Reagan National Airport on Jan. 29 killed all 67 people aboard the two aircraft. It was the country’s deadliest aviation disaster since 2001.

The regional jet out of Wichita, Kansas, was carrying 60 passengers and four crew and preparing to land when the helicopter apparently flew into its path, causing a collision that sent both aircraft into the icy waters of the Potomac River.

The UH-60 Black Hawk, based at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, was on a training exercise and carried three soldiers.

Among those killed were members of the Skating Club of Boston who were returning from a development camp that followed the 2025 U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Wichita.

The victims also included a group of hunters returning from a guided trip in Kansas, four members of a steamfitters’ local union in suburban Maryland, nine students and parents from Fairfax County, Virginia, schools and two Chinese nationals.

SAO PAULO — A small aircraft crashed on an avenue in Sao Paulo, killing at least two passengers, the local firefighter corps said in a statement.

The plane went down in the Barra Funda neighborhood one the city’s west side, near its downtown. A piece of the plane hit a bus, injuring one woman inside, while a motorcyclist was struck by another piece of wreckage, the statement said. Both were receiving medical care.

Images on local media showed the plane’s fuselage and the bus on fire, with firefighters working to extinguish the blaze.

SEOUL, South Korea — The tail of a passenger plane with 176 people on board caught fire before takeoff at an airport in South Korea Tuesday night, news reports said. All passnagers and crew weer safely evacuated.

The Air Busan plane at Gimhae International Airport in the southeastern city of Busan was bound for Hong Kong, Yonhap news agency reported. The 169 passengers and seven crew members were evacuated using an inflatable slide, the report said, adding that three people were injured but their condition wasn’t serious.

Calls to fire authorities in Busan were unanswered.

In December, a Jeju Air passenger plane crashed at Muan International Airport in southern South Korea, killing all but two of the 181 people on board.

The Boeing 737-800 skidded off the airport’s runaway on Dec. 29 after its landing gear failed to deploy, slamming into a concrete structure and bursting into flames. The flight was returning from Bangkok and all of the victims were South Koreans except for two Thai nationals.

SEOUL, South Korea — South Korea will remove a concrete structure at an airport runway that may have been involved in a devastating plane crash that killed all but two of the 181 people on board last month.

Some experts and observers have said Muan International Airport’s localizer — a concrete fence at the end of the runway that houses a set of antennas designed to guide aircraft safely during landings — likely made the crash of the Jeju Air plane worse, though the incident is still under investigation.

The Boeing 737-800 skidded off the airport’s runaway on Dec. 29 after its landing gear failed to deploy, slamming into the concrete structure and bursting into flames. Many observers said the structure should have been made with lighter materials that could break more easily upon impact.

The Transport Ministry said Wednesday it will remove the structure at Muan airport and install a new one made of easily breakable materials.

It said it will push to remove or make adjustments at similar facilities at six airports across South Korea.

The black boxes of the Boeing jetliner stopped recording about four minutes before the accident, South Korean officials said, possibly complicating investigations into the cause of the disaster.

Investigators have said that air traffic controllers warned the pilot about possible bird strikes two minutes before the aircraft issued a distress signal confirming that a bird strike had occurred, after which the pilot attempted an emergency landing.

PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii — Bob Fernandez thought he’d go dancing and see the world when he joined the U.S. Navy as a 17-year-old high school student in August 1941.

Four months later he found himself shaking from explosions and passing ammunition to artillery crews so his ship’s guns could return fire on Japanese planes bombing Pearl Harbor, a Navy base in Hawaii.

“When those things go off like that, we didn’t know what’s what,” said Fernandez, who is now 100. “We didn’t even know we were in a war.”

Two survivors of the bombing — each 100 or older — are planning to return to Pearl Harbor on Saturday to observe the 83rd anniversary of the attack that thrust the U.S. into World War II. They will join active-duty troops, veterans and members of the public for a remembrance ceremony hosted by the Navy and the National Park Service.

Fernandez was initially planning to join them but had to cancel because of health issues.

The bombing killed more than 2,300 U.S. servicemen. Nearly half, or 1,177, were sailors and Marines on board the USS Arizona, which sank during the battle. The remains of more than 900 Arizona crew members are still entombed on the submerged vessel.

A moment of silence will be held at 7:54 a.m., the same time the attack began eight decades ago. Aircraft in missing man formation are due to fly overhead to break the silence.

Dozens of survivors once joined the annual remembrance but attendance has declined as survivors have aged. Today there are only 16 still living, according to a list maintained by Kathleen Farley, the California state chair of the Sons and Daughters of Pearl Harbor Survivors. Military historian J. Michael Wenger has estimated there were some 87,000 military personnel on Oahu on the day of the attack.

Many laud Pearl Harbor survivors as heroes, but Fernandez doesn’t view himself that way.

“I’m not a hero. I’m just nothing but an ammunition passer,” he told The Associated Press in a phone interview from California, where he now lives with his nephew in Lodi.

Fernandez was working as a mess cook on his ship, the USS Curtiss, the morning of Dec. 7, 1941, and planned to go dancing that night at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel in Waikiki.

He brought sailors coffee and food as he waited tables during breakfast. Then they heard an alarm sound. Through a porthole, Fernandez saw a plane with the red ball insignia painted on Japanese aircraft fly by.

Fernandez rushed down three decks to a magazine room where he and other sailors waited for someone to unlock a door storing 5-inch (12.7-centimeter), 38-caliber shells so they could begin passing them to the ship’s guns.

He has told interviewers over the years that some of his fellow sailors were praying and crying as they heard gunfire up above.

“I felt kind of scared because I didn’t know what the hell was going on,” Fernandez said.

The ship’s guns hit a Japanese plane that crashed into one of its cranes. Shortly after, its guns hit a dive bomber which then slammed into the ship and exploded below deck, setting the hangar and main decks on fire, according to the Navy History and Heritage Command.

Fernandez’s ship, the Curtiss, lost 21 men and nearly 60 of its sailors were injured.

“We lost a lot of good people, you know. They didn’t do nothing,” Fernandez said. “But we never know what’s going to happen in a war.”

After the attack, Fernandez had to sweep up debris. That night, he stood guard with a rifle to make sure no one tried to come aboard. When it came time to rest, he fell asleep next to where the ship’s dead were lying. He only realized that when a fellow sailor woke him up and told him.

After the war, Fernandez worked as a forklift driver at a cannery in San Leandro, California. His wife of 65 years, Mary Fernandez, died in 2014. His oldest son is now 82 and lives in Arizona. Two other sons and a stepdaughter have died.

He has traveled to Hawaii three times to participate in the Pearl Harbor remembrance. This year would have been his fourth trip.

Fernandez still enjoys music and goes dancing at a nearby restaurant once a week if he can. His favorite tune is Frank Sinatra’s rendition of “All of Me,” a song his nephew Joe Guthrie said he still knows by heart.

“The ladies flock to him like moths to a flame,” Guthrie said.
