A Texas nun who advocates for immigrants is making an unexpected journey to Rome for Pope Francis’ funeral a decade after the pontiff singled her out for praise during a 2015 ABC News event.

Sister Norma Pimentel has been the face of immigrant advocacy in South Texas for more than a decade, overseeing the Rio Grande Valley in her role as executive director of Catholic Charities.

Speaking to ABC News on Thursday, Pimentel recalled her work with migrant families in 2014 when she helped Border Patrol respond to large groups of families arriving in poor conditions, mostly from El Salvador. She highlighted the community’s response at Sacred Heart Parish Hall and discussed the impact of Pope Francis’ support.

“I visited Rome and wrote him letters and he sent a video message,” Pimentel told ABC News. “After that, I was invited to the Vatican a couple of times to speak and I met the Holy Father as well.”

Stocks were already headed for a lower open on Monday, but lost more ground following President Donald Trump’s post on Truth Social criticizing Fed Chair Jerome Powell.

The Dow is down more than 800 points. The S&P is down more than 2% and the NASDAQ is down nearly 3%.

Stocks are lower, but the price of treasuries and value of the dollar, which normally rise in times of market turmoil, are also lower.

“‘Preemptive Cuts'” in Interest Rates are being called for by many,” Trump wrote Monday. “With Energy Costs way down, food prices (including Biden’s egg disaster!) substantially lower, and most other ‘things’ trending down, there is virtually No Inflation.”

“With these costs trending so nicely downward, just what I predicted they would do, there can almost be no inflation, but there can be a SLOWING of the economy unless Mr. Too Late, a major loser, lowers interest rates, NOW,” Trump continued. “Europe has already “lowered” seven times. Powell has always been ‘To Late.'”

Pope Francis will be remembered as “a beacon of compassion, humility and spiritual courage,” India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Monday, as tributes for the pontiff continued.

“From a young age, he devoted himself towards realising the ideals of Lord Christ. He diligently served the poor and downtrodden,” Modi’s statement read in part.

He added, “For those who were suffering, he ignited a spirit of hope. I fondly recall my meetings with him and was greatly inspired by his commitment to inclusive and all-round development. His affection for the people of India will always be cherished. May his soul find eternal peace in God’s embrace.”

The president of Kenya, William Samoei Ruto, said the pontiff had “exemplified servant leadership through his humility.”

He added, “We join the Catholic Church and the global Christian community in mourning the passing of Pope Francis. This is a big loss to the Catholic faithful and the Christian world. Pope Francis will be remembered for a life dedicated to serving the Lord, the Church, and humanity.”

Prime Minster Keir Starmer of the United Kingdom echoed those thoughts, praising Francis’ “tireless efforts to promote a world that is fairer for all will leave a lasting legacy.”

“Deeply saddened to hear of the death of His Holiness Pope Francis,” Starmer said in a statement released by his office. “His tireless efforts to promote a world that is fairer for all will leave a lasting legacy. On behalf of the people of the United Kingdom, I share my sincerest condolences to the whole Catholic Church.”

And in Germany, the current and incoming chancellors released statements.

Olaf Scholz, the current leader, said: “With the death of Pope Francis, the Catholic Church and the world lose an advocate for the weak, a reconciling and a warm-hearted person. I greatly appreciated his clear view of the challenges we face. My sympathies go out to the religious community worldwide.”

And Friedrich Merz, the incoming chancellor, said Francis will be remembered for “his tireless dedication to the weakest in society.”

“The death of Pope Francis fills me with great sadness. Francis will be remembered for his tireless dedication to the weakest in society, for justice and reconciliation,” Merz continued. “Humility and faith in God’s mercy guided him. In doing so, the first Latin American on the Holy See touched people worldwide and across denominational boundaries. My thoughts are with the faithful around the world in these hours, who have lost their Holy Father. May he rest in peace.”

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth used a second Signal chat to discuss last month’s airstrikes in Yemen with his wife, brother and personal lawyer, sources told ABC News on Sunday.

In response, Sen. Tammy Duckworth of Illinois called for him to “resign in disgrace” in a statement on Sunday.

“How many times does Pete Hegseth need to leak classified intelligence before Donald Trump and Republicans understand that he isn’t only a f***ing liar, he is a threat to our national security?” Duckworth said.

Sen. Jack Reed of Rhode Island, the top Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee, also issued a statement on Sunday, saying that he has “grave concerns about Secretary Hegseth’s ability to maintain the trust and confidence of U.S. servicemembers and the Commander-in-Chief.”

Reed called on the Department of Defense’s Office of the Inspector General to include this incident in its ongoing investigation of Hegseth’s handling of classified information.

“If true, this incident is another troubling example of Secretary Hegseth’s reckless disregard for the laws and protocols that every other military servicemember is required to follow. He must immediately explain why he reportedly texted classified information that could endanger American servicemembers’ lives on a commercial app that included his wife, brother, and personal lawyer,” Reed said.

Trump on Sunday said, “There was no Tariff ‘exemption’ announced on Friday” and that semiconductor tariffs will “just be moving to a different Tariff ‘bucket.’”

“NOBODY is getting ‘off the hook’ for the unfair Trade Balances, and Non Monetary Tariff Barriers, that other Countries have used against us, especially not China which, by far, treats us the worst!” Trump posted on his Truth Social platform.

Trump’s top economic and trade aides made the same argument on Sunday talk shows: that smartphones, computers and other electronics were removed from the sweeping reciprocal tariffs the president announced on April 2 and will be part of a separate national security classification under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 Trump is to announce, they said.

“We are taking a look at Semiconductors and the WHOLE ELECTRONICS SUPPLY CHAIN in the upcoming National Security Tariff Investigations,” Trump wrote.

A bulletin posted by U.S. Customs and Border Protection late Friday night said the administration was exempting smartphones, computers, and other electronics from his reciprocal tariffs.

Trump did not push back Saturday night when a reporter asked for details on “exemptions.”

“I’ll give you that answer on Monday. We’ll be very specific on Monday,” Trump said. “We’re taking in a lot of money. As a country, we’re taking in a lot of money.”

President Donald Trump is scheduled on Monday to host El Salvador’s president, Nayib Bukele, for a bilateral meeting at the White House.

Trump early on Sunday told reporters he thought Bukele was doing a “fantastic job” and “taking care of a lot of problems that we have that we really wouldn’t be able to take care of from a cost standpoint.”

As the second Trump administration has cracked down on immigration, El Salvador has accepted into its custody hundreds of alleged gang members. Many are housed in the country’s Terrorism Confinement Center, a maximum-security facility for El Salvador’s most hardened criminals.

“We have some very bad people in that prison, people that should have never been allowed into our country, people that murder drug dealers, some of the worst people on Earth are in that prison and he’s able to do that,” Trump said on Sunday.

At least one man, Kilmar Abrego Garcia, was deported due to an “administrative error” and is being held at that notorious prison.

Attorney General Pam Bondi said Sunday she expects Trump will “probably” leave the presidency following his second term — even as she left the door slightly open toward him serving another four years in what she described as a “heavy lift” to amend the U.S. Constitution.

“President Trump has served one full term. He’s on his second full term. He’s a very smart man and — we, I wish we could have him for 20 years as our president, but I think he’s going to be finished probably after this term,” Bondi said in an interview on “Fox News Sunday.”

“Probably?” host Shannon Bream asked.

“Well, the Constitution — we’d have to look at the Constitution,” Bondi replied. “It would be a heavy lift.”

“And whether you get two thirds of the Senate and House to go along with you — but is the concession that that’s really the only way to do it?” Bream said.

“It’d be a heavy lift,” Bondi responded.

President Donald Trump said America’s trade deficit with China must first be resolved before he considers making a deal regarding his sweeping tariffs against the country.

“We have a trillion-dollar trade deficit with China — hundreds of billions of dollars a year we lose with China. And unless we solve that problem, I’m not going to make a deal,” the president told reporters on Air Force One on Sunday.

“Now, I’m willing to deal with China, but they have to solve their surplus. We have a tremendous deficit problem with China. They have a surplus of at least a trillion dollars a year. I think it’s like a trillion one, and I want that solved,” Trump said.

The president also discussed with reporters the TikTok deal being in limbo, saying that China did not approve the deal because of the tariffs on the country.

“The report is that we had a deal — pretty much for TikTok, not a deal, but pretty close and then China changed the deal because of tariffs. If I gave a little cut in tariffs, it approved that deal in 15 minutes, which shows you the power of tariffs,” Trump said.

Jeep maker Stellantis said on Thursday it will temporarily pause production at two plants: one in Windsor, Canada plant and another in Toluca, Mexico.

As a result, there will be temporarily layoffs for 900 employees at their American plants. Those locations include Warren Stamping and Sterling Stamping plants in Michigan as well as the Indiana Transmission, Kokomo Transmission and Kokomo Casting plants in Indiana.

The company said it’s doing this as it assesses the medium and long-term effects of tariffs. The Trump administration’s 25% auto tariff took effect earlier Thursday.

When asked about what Wednesday’s sweeping tariffs set to go into effect on Wednesday would look like, Trump said that Americans would “see in two days.”

Though Trump was light on specifics, he seemed to indicate that the tariffs might be lower than those imposed by other countries on the U.S.

“So, whatever they charge us, we charge them. But we’re being nicer than they were,” he said. “We have a lot of countries, friend and foe. I always say friend and foe, but the friend in many cases is worse than the foe. They took advantage of us. And, we are going to be very nice by comparison to what they were. The numbers will be lower than what they’ve been charging us, and in some cases, maybe substantially lower.”

When asked whether any countries might be exempt from the reciprocal tariffs, Trump said “it depends,” and seemed to indicate he wouldn’t target countries that had smaller trade deficits with the U.S.

Asked by ABC News’ Karen Travers if he’s heard any concerns from automakers about the pending tariffs, especially after a meeting today with the chairman of Stellantis, Trump said no.

“Well, I gave them a big break for a month. I didn’t charge them anything, you know, for a big month, for that first month, and they brought a lot of material into this country, because they could bring it in with that tariff,” Trump said.

Travers also pressed Trump on news that China, South Korea and Japan are working together to respond to U.S. tariffs, asking if he was concerned that the tariffs would push allies closer to China. Trump said he was not aware of that news, but did brush off the concerns.
